Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) comes into effect on 10 September 2008 for PCV Drivers (bus and coach), and 10 September 2009 for lorry drivers (7.5T & HGV). The aims of the CPC are to improve road safety, recognise and accredit the knowledge and skills required for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers, ensure drivers continually update their skills and knowledge, raise the status of bus, coach and lorry drivers to promote driving as a career.
Anyone who holds a bus, coach or lorry licence on the start dates will have 'acquired rights' (grandfather rights) for the following 5 years and do not need to hold a Driver CPC during that period. However drivers will need to start working towards getting their Driver CPC periodic training if they wish to continue driving beyond those 5 years. 35 hours of periodic training has to be completed within the 5 year period.
